Texas has 1,250 Independent School Districts. Several conservative political action committees with a lot of money have begun lobbying and encouraging people to attend school board meetings where they read aloud selected passages, usually out of context, with the goal of banning these books. In 2021, A Texas Republican released a list of 879 book titles that he felt would make school children feel “guilt, discomfort, or anguish.” Many of the titles on his list cover important moments in black history, sex education, or characters that are LGBTQ. The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe involves a same sex relationship, including a kiss! If this is what you consider worthy of a book ban, your kid has a lot more problems ahead of them than reading about a kiss. She left a statement on her twitter page about the Texas book ban list (see “Book Challenges” below). Tess Sharpe is the author of several Young Adult novels.
